WHEN AND WHERE?
XYIV: The game will happen on Sunday April 28 in the Podil district of Kyiv, from 14:00 to 18:00, with coffee breaks, dinner and drinks provided by the organizers, and a party afterwards at Coschey Local DIY.
WHAT’S THE GOAL?
The goal of this game is to try out Delta Chat app for mobile and desktop in real-life conditions in the city. It’s a sort of a scavenger hunt, with number of quests to accomplish – from finding dead drops with stickers and USB keys in the city, to rescuing a kidnapped journalist; from stalking interesting sites to transferring secret files from a whistleblower…
HOW WILL THE GAME HAPPEN? [THE “RULES”]
13 to 14:00 – we gather at the Basecamp (Andriivskiy descent; details will be provided to all participants personally)
After the installation of the app on everyone’s devices (some test devices will be provided, and test accounts as well!) we will prepare for the game.
Two teams will be formed by randomly picking some of our beautiful cards designed by Kyiv-based artist and musician Demian Feriy. You will play for the team of Cubes or the team of Spheres. On your card you will see the role name (e.g. Coordinator, Whistleblower, Stalker, Journalist…) and the role description. You will also be added to the Team Coordination group chat on Delta Chat, where you can request FAQ/Help. You will receive tasks from your Team Coordinator who will be located at the Basecamp.
At any moment you can alert the Basecamp and request a break or ask to withdraw yourself from the game. Your points will not be lost, and will be transmitted to your team! You can also ask to shift your roles with someone else. You can arrange this shift by yourself over Delta Chat, or ask the Basecamp for help.
SOME EXAMPLES OF TASKS
As as Journalist, you may be asked to move to a secret meeting point where you will have to interview a famous Politician. You will record a 1-minute audio file and will have to move to a secure location with a WiFi to transfer it to the Basecamp. Attention! The Inspector/Necromancer can kidnap you and steal your files!
As a Coordinator, you may be asked to quickly form a rescue team to provide help to the kidnapped Journalist. You may do this by creating a chat with a few members of your Team and securely communicate the location of the person in need.
As a Magician/Trickster, you can invent a new task for yourself or others. You can see what others do and send “Inspectors”, “Spies”, “Necromancers” to trick other players.
Many more roles exist, and each one has something special to do. However, everyone can also execute basic tasks, such as finding dead-drops, taking pictures of beautiful/interesting spots, documenting police / military / other “adversarial” presence in the city, and so on.
HOW WILL WE JUDGE THE GAME?
Of course, we will calculate points for each executed task. However, what counts more is the Potlatch. In the end of the game, when everyone gathers at the Basecamp, we will ask you to share your experiences, difficulties, technical and social bugs encountered during the Game. This Potlatch – as the ritual of sharing and gifting each other with stories – will count as a separate task and can actually help your Team gain some more points.
In the end we will offer snacks and drinks to all the participants. After the Game, we invite everyone to join us at Coschey Local DIY bar (Yaroslavskiy val, 10-minute walk from the Basecamp) to enjoy music, drinks, dances, hacks and discussions.
